words, interview and photo by Shabnam Ferdowsi
I'm a couple weeks into this residency with Bedbugs, and personally I'm having a great time. I've been to a rehearsal, I had them play one of my shows, we hung out in the green room, and I'm slowly getting to know each of them better than I did before.
Up next on the member spotlight we have Kenzo Cardenas on drums. Kenzo is the reason I got introduced to Bedbugs last year, since he plays in another local favorite of mine, Kid Cadaver. So sure, maybe I already know the guy a little better than the others already, but I'm a true believer that the process of getting to know people and building friendships can go on endlessly.
So that said, here's a little interview I did with him:
What inspired you to join Alex and Kevin to start the band with them when you were already involved in another project?
They had a demo of "How Things Go" when they were under the name Andrew Gwarfield. I was like this is really cool. Alex was in his old band and I'm still in Kid Cadaver. I thought it'd be a fun side project. Things changed when his band broke up. This was his baby. They know KC is my first priority which is cool that they respect that. At this point, things haven't conflicted. Cool story.
How is drumming for Bedbugs different?
Biggest thing is being off the click. We are never restricted to a certain tempo. The time changes are the coolest. I get to practice a few stuff I've been working on at home which is cool. I still suck at drums.
What it is about the drums or music in general that makes you feel so passionately about it?
Music is life. Drums is alright. Kevin's come a long way. He is really inspiring. He practices so much. When I met him he'd be really shy to play in front of me but now he's just killing. Practice makes perfect! Alex is a song writing machine. He sends me like a couple demos a week. I can't keep track of his tracks. He's always sending me new bands to check out. Vlad is our newest member and he is a great addition. He's really passionate about music. Very smart. Very chill dude. They inspire me to (try) to practice everyday.
Funniest Bedbugs moment?
Seeing Alex and Kevin stoned at practice.. Or Alex drunk at parties.
I asked Kenzo for a 10-song playlist too. Here's what he made:
Stay tuned for more on Bedbugs the rest of February!
