RECAP: Official Echo Park Rising Showcase 2016

words and photos by Shab Ferdowsi

Last night was surreal. Beating Lights hit Echo Park Rising with an official stage at the Lost Knight on the second night of the fest this year. I still can't believe I was able to make it happen!

BL is still fairly new to the local scene. I threw the first backyard show in September 2014, but it really wasn't until January of this year when I began booking shows at venues, connecting with more bands around town, and putting myself out there that I began to become more involved with the scene. 2016 has been nothing short of thrilling so far, and to be able to celebrate where BL has come in just the past year with a stage at EPR was humbling.

For the bill, I gathered all the bands who've been giving their friendship (and time) back into Beating Lights in one form or another. Because that's why I do what I do! I strive to be able to support the artists I work with, hoping to give them a platform to share their art, connect with one another, make more friends, and eventually, expand their own communities for even more growth. In return, all I really ask for is friendship.

Last night the bands came hours earlier before their sets, and stayed passed their load-out times, to hang out, mingle, and support the community. It was SO Sweet to see it all happen. :)

Shoutout to my friends who killed the stage: WASI • Minimall • Super Whatevr • Royaljag •  Bedbugs • AudioMammal • The Knitts • Liv Slingerland • Outside Animals

Check out some photos from the night and listen to the playlist below!

Our next event is on Sunday September 4th in backyard in DTLA, 2-7pm, FREE, All ages, free ice cream, free beer, 6 bands, all kinds of fun.

More info here.

See you around town, friends!

Hey it's been a minute, hasn't it?

I've been quiet on the blog front this month because BL hasn't had any events, but it's been a swell month to say the least. I left my day job, spent a weekend in San Francisco, continued planning summer happenings and finally, finally, finally signed a lease for an apartment in Echo Park! I drank a lot of coffee, sent more emails than ever, and became the person who texted you back instantly because I was so tuned in to the adrenaline I couldn't take a break. I loved every single second of it. The future is looking beautiful, and I can't wait to see what I can do with you all.

Here are the tunes that kept me going this May:

PLAYLIST: April 2016

April was a whirlwhind.  Beating Lights had a backyard show, a house party and a show at the Hi Hat, along with a band residency to see to, and summer events to plan. I went to many, many shows, attended Broke LA for the first time, went on a handful of needed coffee dates with fellow creative minds in and around the music scene, and of course took tons of photos along the way. I feel like every day in April I had a new idea pop into my head, making me that much more excited about everything that is here right now, and all that is about to happen.

Here's the music that made April what it was:

SXSW // Preview: We Found New Music Official Showcase 2016

words by Shabnam Ferdowsi

I'm headed to Austin this week for SXSW for my first time ever and I'm so stoked! Aside from the plethora of bands I'm going to see and people I'm going to meet, I'm thrilled to be helping my good friend Grant Owens, creator of We Found New Music, at his official showcase.

This Wednesday night at Speakeasy , WFNM has curated a rad line-up of artists from around the world for the good vibes. Beating Lights will be co-supporting the show with Free Bike Valet, I Heart Moosiq and  Liberal Arts! I'll be up right by the stage photographing the live performances, as well as backstage helping Grant film artist interviews.

PLAYLIST: January 2016

words  and playlist by Shabnam Ferdowsi

January was a whirlwind. On the first of the month, I landed back in Los Angeles after spending 3 months abroad, immediately released the new website, and started promoting the relaunch party. So I dived head first, sprinting and cartwheeling back into the grind of real life, going to shows multiple times a week,  working my day job at a daycare, booking photoshoots and remembering how to have a social life again.

I've been listening to a lot of new music.  My taste has been evolving really hard and really fast in the past 6 months, and it started fueling whole new feelings while I was away. The fidelity is lower, it's noisier, fuzzier, less polished,  and runs on the same rhythm as my adrenaline is these days.

Take a listen and feel what I was feeling last month:

reLaunch Party Spotlight: Hours Lost // POP UP

Hours Lost is an online clothing brand managed in Los Angeles. As its founder and designer, I aim to encourage people to navigate time, an intangible system, without letting it go to waste. I believe it’s important to find time for things that personally matter. I started Hours Lost while I was in college, because I craved a passion project. I had a desire to create something with a concept that would inspire others as much as it inspired me. I love making simple designs with thought-provoking messages for HL items, and discussing my work with people is what I enjoy the most. I love connecting with people, and I’m always inspired by their own ideas and acts of perseverance to do what makes them happy. - Jenay Ross // Founder

Hours Lost will be setting up their pop up shop at our reLaunch Party on January 30th! Come hang out, connect with Jenay, and support local brands!  More info here.
